Why we love Hollywood Weddings…

Yes, I know, we all love us some celeb gossip, especially when it’s about who’s getting married, when they’re getting married, what they’re wearing, and how long that marriage will last…but, this post is NOT about that type of Hollywood wedding.

Today, I come to you with the appeal of Weddings MADE in Hollywood (movies about weddings!)  As moviegoers we thoroughly enjoy when a film is made well, and if it’s not – we make the best of imagination and put ourselves in their shoes.  Here are a few of my favorite wedding-oriented flicks that I’ve enjoyed.

With Bride Wars hitting theatres on Friday January 9, 2009, I realized there have been some great movies with the focus all about getting married!  The plot:  Two best friends become rivals when they schedule their respective weddings on the same day. (source:  IMDB)

Where is that wedding being held, you ask?  Well, none other than the infamous Plaza Hotel in New York.  Could you imagine if your wedding date and location was booked by someone you despised?  It’s bad enough some brides don’t even want to SEE another bride at their venue or even walking the streets…so that’s one point to consider when booking your perfect venue.  How many weddings are held simoultaneously and if there are multiple events, what is the time allocated between events?

Last year, another famous New York location, The Central Park Boathouse was featured in the movie 27 Dresses.  The plot:  After serving as a bridesmaid 27 times, a young woman wrestles with the idea of standing by her sister’s side as her sibling marries the man she’s secretly in love with.(source:  IMDB)

I know while watching this movie, I definitely ran through the amount of weddings I’ve been a part of.  After it was over, I couldn’t help but run to my closet to see how many bridesmaid dresses I had stored…so, how many weddings have you been a part of? I’m a firm believer of quality over quantity.  Involve those that you want to be there, that you are honored to have by your side…not just there because mom said so.  Being in a bridal party has it’s work cut out, and you want someone to be there for the good, bad, and the ugly (dresses.)

In 2007 & 2005 I personally enjoyed License to Wed and Wedding Crashers.  Every single person in the theatre was laughing themselves to tears!  The plot:  A reverend puts an engaged couple through a grueling marriage preparation course to see if they are meant to be married in his church. / John Beckwith and Jeremy Grey, a pair of committed womanizers who sneak into weddings to take advantage of the romantic tinge in the air, find themselves at odds with one another when John meets and falls for Claire Cleary. Worried about wedding crashers at your event?  Fear not, someone is keeping an eye out for who belongs and who doesn’t.  If it’s not your planner, coordinator, Maitre’D, Captain, Security, it’s one of your guests that KNOWS someone does not belong there.  Chances are in your favor that that unwelcomed guest is spotted quickly and escorted on their way.

Oh, but who can forget, My Big Fat Greek Wedding?  The plot:  A young Greek woman falls in love with a non-Greek and struggles to get her family to accept him while she comes to terms with her heritage and cultural identity. (source:  IMDB)

How many Greeks, Italians, Middle-Easterners knew exactly what Toula and Ian were going through?  I sure did, and still enjoy watching this flick with my family quite often.

Finally, one movie that we are constantly compared to is, The Wedding Planner, with Mrs. J-Lo herself. The plot:  Mary Fiore is the wedding planner. She’s ambitious, hard-working, extremely organized, and she knows exactly what to do and say to make any wedding a spectacular event. (Source:  IMDB)

There is not one wedding that we’ll attend and asked by a guest:  “So, like your job, it’s like J.Lo right?”  Our response is always “It looks glamorous in the movie doesn’t it?  Well – yes, we’re like J.Lo.”   There are certainly pluses and negatives to this business, but in the end, it’s worthwhile.  We’re always there to share in one of the most intimate events in a persons’ life, and how many people can say their career is based on that?

In the end, there are certainly weddings that share the glamour as portrayed in Hollywood; but let’s just say keep the drama to Hollywood, and keep the weddings in New York because there really is NOTHING like it.
